What we assume
- Calendar days are counted: weekends and public holidays are included.
- By default the end day is not counted. From 1 to 2 January there is 1 day.
- Everything is worked out in UTC, so daylight saving changes never shift the answer.
How it is calculated
The difference comes from converting both dates to absolute day numbers and subtracting. It is exact: leap years and months of different lengths are handled without any approximation.
The usual question is whether the end day counts. It depends what you need it for:
- Without the end day for deadlines and due dates: 1 to 2 January is 1 day.
- With the end day for holidays and stays: 1 to 2 January is 2 days.
If what you need is to skip weekends and public holidays, use the working days calculator.
An example
From 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026 there are 364 days, exactly 52 weeks. Tick the box to count the end day and you get 365: the full year.
Frequently asked questions
Does the end day count?
Not by default. From 1 to 2 January it returns 1 day. Tick the box and it returns 2.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. Between 1 January 2024 and 1 January 2025 there are 366 days, because 2024 was a leap year.
Can the end date be before the start date?
Yes. We return the difference as an absolute value and warn you that the dates are the wrong way round.
