What we assume

  • The percentage is always measured against the total you enter.
  • The part is allowed to exceed the total: the result will go above 100%.
  • The total cannot be zero, because that would mean dividing by zero.

How it is calculated

It is a division followed by a multiplication:

percentage = part / total x 100

The order matters, and it is where almost everyone slips. "What percentage is 25 of 200?" is not the same question as "what is 25% of 200?". The first gives 12.5%; the second gives 50.

The ratio makes it click

Besides the percentage we give the ratio in plain words: "1 in 8". For awkward figures that is often easier to picture than a decimal.

An example

25 out of 200 is 12.5%. The rest, 175, is 87.5%. Put another way: 1 in every 8.

Frequently asked questions

What if the part is bigger than the total?

You get a percentage above 100, which is perfectly valid. It usually means you have swapped the two fields, so it is worth a second look.

Why is the fraction not always exact?

We simplify to the nearest readable fraction. For an exact figure, use the percentage, which is not rounded internally.

Is this the same as percentage change?

No. This tells you what share one number is of another. Percentage change tells you how much a single number has moved between two moments.
