What we assume
- The pace is assumed constant for the whole distance.
- Official distances are the certified ones: half marathon 21,097.5 m and marathon 42,195 m.
- The splits are the theoretical share-out. A real race adds elevation, wind and a crowded start.
How it is calculated
Pace, time and distance are three faces of the same number: know two and the third falls out.
pace = time / distance · time = pace x distance
The only fiddly part is the sexagesimal format: 5:30 is not 5.5 minutes, it is 5 minutes and 30 seconds, which is exactly why doing it in your head goes wrong so often.
Pace or speed
Runners think in minutes per kilometre or mile: lower is faster. Cyclists think the other way round, in km/h or mph. We give both, plus the pace per mile, because plenty of training plans come in imperial units.
The split table
This is the part that earns its keep on race day: the elapsed time you should see at each marker to know whether you are on schedule. Copy the link with your figures and take it on your phone.
An example
A 10K in 50 minutes is 5:00 min/km, that is 12 km/h or 8:03 per mile. You should pass 5K at 25:00.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a marathon 42,195 metres?
It is the distance from Windsor Castle to the Olympic stadium in London in 1908. It was fixed as official in 1921 and has stayed there ever since.
Can I use a distance that is not on the list?
Yes, pick "Another distance" and enter it. Useful for trail races, training runs, and local races with odd distances.
Are these splits good for a real race?
As a reference, yes, but they assume even pacing. On a hilly course it is better to run by effort, easing on the climbs and recovering on the descents, rather than forcing each split.
