What we assume
- The room is treated as a rectangle. For an L-shaped room, split it in two and add the results.
- The default wastage is 10%, which covers straight cuts. Diagonal or herringbone layouts need more, often 15% to 20%.
- Boxes are rounded up: shops rarely sell half a box.
- Skirting, thresholds and adhesive are not included.
How it is calculated
The area of the room divided by the area of one tile gives the tiles needed, and the wastage is added on top:
tiles = room area x (1 + wastage) / tile area
Then the tiles are divided by the tiles per box and rounded up.
Why wastage is not optional
Every edge needs a cut, and the offcut is usually unusable. Add breakages while handling and the odd tile that turns out chipped, and 10% is not padding: it is the normal amount you will not be able to lay.
An example
A room of 5 by 4 with 60 by 60 tiles and 10% wastage needs 62 tiles. At 6 per box that is 11 boxes, leaving four spare — which is exactly what you want for future repairs.
Frequently asked questions
How much wastage should I allow?
10% for a straight layout in a simple room. 15% to 20% if you are laying diagonally, using herringbone, or the room has lots of corners and obstacles.
Should I keep the spares?
Yes. Keep at least a few. If a tile cracks in three years, matching it from a different batch is close to impossible.
What about an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, run the calculation twice and add the tiles. Adding the areas first and treating it as one rectangle underestimates the cuts.
