What grade do I need on the final

Tell us what you have and how much it counts. We tell you what you need on the rest, and if it is already out of reach we say so plainly.

Your figures

If coursework is 60% and the final is 40%, enter 60.
Usually 10 or 100, depending on your institution.

What we assume

  • The final grade is assumed to be a weighted average of what you have done and what is left.
  • Minimum grades per component are not considered: many courses require a minimum on the final exam for it to count at all. Check your syllabus.
  • Institutional rounding is not applied, which sometimes helps you and sometimes does not.

How it is calculated

Your final grade is a weighted average. What you have already done contributes a fixed number of points, and what is left has to supply the rest:

needed = (target - grade_so_far x weight_done) / weight_left

The two numbers worth looking at

Besides what you need, we show the best grade still possible and the worst you can no longer avoid. Those two bracket the whole range of outcomes still open to you, and they are often more useful than the target itself: if the best possible is below what you wanted, no amount of studying changes it.

An example

With 6 banked over 60% of the grade and a target of 7, you need 8.5 on the remaining 40%. The best you could still finish with is 9.6; the worst is 3.6.

Frequently asked questions

What if the number it gives is above the maximum?

Then the target is out of reach and we say so, along with the best grade you could still finish with. It is better to know early than to find out in the exam.

Does it account for a minimum required on the final?

No, and that is the most common gotcha. Plenty of courses require a minimum on the final exam before anything is averaged. Check your syllabus.

Can I use a scale out of 100?

Yes. Set the maximum to 100 and enter everything on that scale.
